Graphite on heavyweight cartridge paper.
I loved this image the moment I laid my eyes on it. Firstly, this was my first time drawing wood, which I came to learn can include interesting textures with harsh angles met by smooth curves. It was a real challenge and I did have to keep taking a step back to assess how the outcome would be perceived.
But there was something about this young baboon clinging to this broken, decaying branch that I found quite pleasing. To the baboon, (like a child) it doesn’t matter that his seat isn’t the most pleasant because to him it can be whatever he imagines it to be. He sits confident and full of pride and finds this branch (that many would discard) to be more than enough.
